How Dora's Dream
Dora Anie tells her story: In July 2003 my daughters Ann-Marie and Barbara, who were born here in Canada, wanted to visit Ghana where I was born. We took a trip of a lifetime to Ghana to show them my history. At this time, I had not been to Ghana for 13 years since the death of my mother in 1990. I became a stranger to my own motherland. We visited Mepom, the village where I had lived and attended elementary school. I attended a Presbyterian Primary and Middle School, which were funded by the Presbyterian Church. We visited my old school and realized that the school had been torn down and moved to a new location, looking a little better than what I pictured it to be. What we found to our surprise was the poor conditions and the building where the Nursery, Junior and Senior Kindergarten were attending classes. These little children were attending classes in an old abandoned cocoa warehouse with no windows and because it was a warehouse, it was concrete and therefore very hot inside. These children were being fed at the school, but their kitchen was a disaster. There was nowhere for the little Nursery children to nap or rest, when needed. On our return to Canada, I had a chance to talk about our experience on our vacation, to the congregation at MacNab Street Presbyterian Church. Through the financial contributions of some of the church groups (choir, Friendly Circle, individual congregational contributions, and also contributions from my friends and family) we were able on February 10, 2007 to open a new Nursery, Junior and Senior Kindergarten for the children of the village of Mepom. |
